Drawing of a fresco of Bacchus and Silenus playing a lyre found in the Casa di Ercole (House of Hercules) Pompeii VIII.3.4 by Henri Roux the Elder.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Drawing of a fresco of Bacchus and Silenus playing a lyre found in the Casa di Ercole ed Auge (House of Hercules and Auge) aka House of the Popidii (Pompeii VIII.3.4) by Henri Roux the Elder. Translated related text: "Bacchus, crowned with a garland of ivy with its corymbs, leans, with the right arm which holds his thyrsus, on the shoulder of Silenus; and with the other hand he poured, on the head of a panther squatting near him, all the wine contained in a cup with two handles. Silenus plucks with his left hand the strings of a lyre which is attached to his neck by a kind of shoulder-belt, and which he further supports with his right hand with his plectrum. The effeminate youth of the god, his soft and flexible figure, his glabrous flesh full of morbidity, contrast with the vigorous old age, with the bald head, but full of fire, with the warm and tanned complexion, the fat, hairy, stocky limbs of that of which he was the pupil. The god has only a small red cloak thrown over his two arms; the other character has the lower body covered by a purple drapery. Near Silenus is a basket full of pomegranates and other fruits, by which the painter no doubt wished to recall that mortals owe to Bacchus not only the vine, but also all the trees of their orchards. The background is filled with a rural landscape, very well treated, in which there is a vine. This fresco, admirable for its design as well as for its coloring, adorned one of the little chambers which are found behind the edifice known under the name of the temple of Venus.

In the vignette, we see two fragments; one of which represents vases with a palm, which indicates athletic prizes; and the other an urn, from the middle of which springs a sort of bubbling jet of water: pure decorator's whim!"
