Translation of Full Plate Description: "Thetis has just plunged Achilles into the Styx, in order to make him invulnerable. The fable relates that to perform this operation the goddess held her son by the heel, and that this part alone remained exposed to the attacks of the iron. The painter seems to have chosen another moment of the same action, the one where the heroic child, emerging from the waves of the river and placed in a more comfortable position, smiles at his mother. Two other nymphs, placed on the edge of the source, admire the courage of the mother and the grace of the child. On the rocks, a winged goddess, her forehead girded with a nimbus, presides over all the action: it is undoubtedly the goddess Styx, daughter of the Ocean and of Tethys, who should not be confused with Peleus's wife, Thétis. Styx was a kind of nemesis; she has wings and a long dress with sleeves, like this last goddess.

"This painting is much more remarkable in terms of composition and drawing than in terms of coloring. The attitude of the four women is full of charming contrasts; the lines are pure; the curves, and particularly that of the neck of one of the nymphs, are rendered with great skill. This is what has led some critics to suppose that this fresco was the copy of another painting, which must offer a complete masterpiece and unite in it all the genres of merit: in truth, this original has not yet been seen anywhere." - Louis Barré, 1870.
