Example ballot on whether a theater should show the film "Her Sister from Paris" (1925)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Example ballot filled out by theater patron on whether the Balaban & Katz Theatre in Chicago should show the American comedy film Her Sister from Paris (1925), on page 29 of the October 31, 1925 Exhibitors Herald. The accompanying article stated that the Chicago board of censors and chief of police tried to ban the film and that the theater be closed if it showed the film, but lawsuits were filed for a writ of mandamus to have a permit issued to show the film. Apparently two jury trials recommended that a permit be issued. A poll was taken of theater patrons, with an overwhelming vote to show the film. A resolution was obtained by agreement with the chief of police where 7 changes were made to the film, 6 of which involved changes to the wording of intertitles, and a permit was issued. The article noted attendence at the theater broke records (when holidays were excluded).
