JPEG file comment | http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/16627/lot/22/ Henry Scott Tuke RA, RWS (British, 1858-1929) Shipping at anchor, Carrick Roads signed and dated 'H.S.Tuke.1898.' (lower left) oil on canvas 61.5 x 91cm This oil painting by Tuke features his favourite maritime subject of shipping at anchor in Falmouth Bay painted at sunset. Tuke was constantly challenging himself as an artist to accurately capture the shifting light and changing colour of twilight and all its reflections in water. The painting shows an Italian barque at anchor on the left, a ship on the right with a third green hulled ship with its sails up being guided to its mooring by a Falmouth tug. Tuke has painted the ship on the right with all the loss of paint on its hull and the orange rust obscuring any detail. This painting is unusually large for Tuke especially in oil and of shipping. His oil paintings of shipping were often on a smaller scale and were seen as studies to be used in the background to major works such as August Blue, 1894 and The Run Home, 1902. |
