[edit]Has Many Swimming Records. Special to The New York Times. Lowell, Massachusetts; August 6, 1923. Determination has won for Henry Sullivan in swimming across the Snell Channel. He had said he intended to keep trying until he accomplished the feat. Sullivan is 30 years old and married. He is the son of a Lowell businessman and has been an expert swimmer since he was 8 years old. His first attempt to swim the English Channel was in 1913. when he came within five miles of the French shore. His nearest approach to success was In one of two tries made in 1920. In the second of these he came within a mile and a half of the French shore, when bad tide conditions forced him to give Summer of 1918 he defeated Charles Toth in a swim from Provincetown to Nantasket. Toth was forced to quit when a shark attacked him. Sullivan was in the water twenty hours and twenty-eight minutes on that swim, an American endurance record, although he did not complete the journey. Later that Summer he defeated Sam Richards over the same course. Sullivan weight about 225 pounds and is 5 feet 6 inches tall a few years ago he duplicated Richards's swim to Charlestown from Boston Light.
