Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Henry Bacon, a drawing of the French artist Édouard Frère (1819-1886) in his "sketching sledge", from Bacon's 1883 book Parisian Art and Artists, p. 117.[1] As Bacon explains, these novel carriages, or "miniature ateliers," were adopted by members of the art colony in Écouen to allow them to paint outdoors in snowy weather. They included a charcoal foot-stove to warm the artist's woolen-slippered feet; wooden shoes were put on for walking in the snow.
