Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sanskrit language was considered as a sacred language in Southeast and East Asia. The language structure as well as some Indic scripts were used in hymns and chants, while the Siddham, Nagari and Pallava script itself emulated and adapted to local scripts.

Alexandre Henri Mouhot published in 1860 a facsimile of Sanskrit, Thai, Lao and Central Khmer inscriptions from Angkor and Korat, showing the link between the languages. The photo above is the first page of 40 folios. The other pages show the map between Sanskrit vowels and consonants and those of major southeast Asian scripts. The folio was acquired by the British Library in 1894.

Scripts in the folio: Transliterated Sanskrit in English with Thai, Tai Tham (Lanna), Lao and Khom script (a variant of Khmer script used in Thailand). For further information, please see Mouhot's Travels in the central parts of Indo-China, Cambodia, and Laos, during the years 1858, 1859, and 1860 (London, 1864).

The photo above is of a 2D artwork from the text that was published in 1860 CE (produced before the acquisition date). Therefore Wikimedia Commons PD-Art licensing guidelines apply. Any rights I have as a photographer is herewith donated to wikimedia commons under CC 4.0 license.
