Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Proposed 1929 final design for Memorial Drive and the Hemicycle, part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia in the United States. The drive and structure are often thought to be part of Arlington National Cemetery, but they are not. Both structures were designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, built in 1931, and dedicated on January 16, 1932. Memorial Drive connects Arlington Memorial Bridge to the Hemicycle, and the Hemicycle was intended to be a ceremonial gateway to the cemetery. The Hemicycle was largely completed, although none of the inscriptions or memorials intended for it placed there. The Hemicycle was transformed into the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in 1997.
