[edit]DescriptionHelping prevent another winter of misery (11174084565).jpg |
Muhanad*, aged 11, from Syria, is now living in an informal settlement in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, close to the border with his home country. His family had to leave because of fighting in their village and they spent a year moving from one place to another before seeking refuge in Lebanon. Millions of Syrian children face their worst winter yet as worsening weather and crowded refugee camps create the ideal conditions for the spread of life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia, International Development Secretary Justine Greening warned today. There are over 800,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon now - 400,000 of whom are children. Aid from the UK is helping NGOs like Save the Children to improve informal shelters like these for thousands of families, to help them withstand the winter. The UK will provide winter tents, warm clothing and heaters as part of an allocation of nearly £90 million to help hundreds of thousands of Syrians, especially children, cope with the onset of winter. As part of the UK's ‘Lost Generation’ initiative, the British government is also currently match-funding Save the Children's Syria Crisis Appeal. If you're a UK citizen and you donate to this appeal, your donation will be matched by the UK government pound for pound, to help Save the Children prevent a lost generation of Syrian children. Image title | Muhanad, aged 11, from Syria, is now living in an informal settlement in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, close to the border with his home country. His family had to leave because of fighting in their village and they spent a year moving from one place to another before seeking refuge in Lebanon. They had to pay £400,000 Lebanese pounds (£150 GBP) for the basic materials to build their flimsy shelter, but they've recently received additional plastic sheeting and other materials funded by the UK, to help them improve the shelter ahead of the coming winter. |
