Notes New Zealand Rifle Volunteers helmet which belonged to Major Andrew Burns Major Andrew Burns Born in County Down, Ireland circa 1838, Andrew Burns migrated to New Zealand arriving on 22 November 1860 aboard the Mermaid. Initially engaged in "agricultural pursuits", he enlisted with the Auckland Militia as an Ensign on 22 October 1863 and subsequently transferred to the 3rd Waikato Regiment and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 June 1866. He was granted crown land, an acre in Cambridge West and 200 acres at Karamu as his entitlement for his military service and received a New Zealand Medal (1871) for his service. Post-war Andrew Burns continued to serve with the Volunteers, from 2 May 1871 to 23 December 1874 with the Hobson Rifle Volunteers, Auckland, and following a move to Dunedin circa 1876, he joined the North Dunedin Rifle Volunteers and later served with the 1st Battalion Otago Rifle Volunteers where he received his final commission as Major in 1886. Following his retirement from the Dunedin Hospital Major Burns returned to Auckland where he was living at the time of his death on 19 July 1919.
