in one of the nice seats, but papa couldnt give me much time to rest. Wewent out a different way from the one we came in, andsaw a very large hall, with nothing in it, and it did ntlook pleasant. Papa said that was the old hall, and agreat many people had been tried in courts there, andsome kings, too. I am going to have Dickens ChildsHistory of England out of Mudies library to read, and then I shall know more about what they used todo there. When we were on the street again, two or threemen and boys ran up to us, and said to papa, Showyou the Abbey, sir ? I could nt think what theymeant; but papa said to them, No, I have been thereoften -before. Where, papa ? I said. To West-minster Abbey, which you can see just across thestreet. I saw then a great, dark looking stone build- 34 HELEN o:n^ her travels. mg, as large as three or four cliurclies together, Ishould think; and papa said some day when mammawas with us, we would go in to see it. I have heardahout it before, have nt you, Susie ?

HELEN ON HER TRAVELS. 35 Tenth Letter. LOISDOI^. Dear Cousin Susie : Do you wake up as early in the morning as youused to? I have to wake up early, for there are somany noises and shouts that I cant sleep. When wewere in Edinhurgh, the hugle call in the Castle usedto be the first thing I heard every morning before itwas light; and now it is the cries of all the peoplewho have anything to sell; and it seems to last allday, too, for there is something being called out all thetime. Do you remember, Susie, that little blue book thatmy uncle Will brought me home from London, called London Cries ? Well, the people here do look andshout just as they do in that book. Men and womenbring along oranges, and apples, and images, and oldiron, and scouring stone, and glass ware; and Jewmen come with a pile of old clothes on their backs, ora lot of old hats piled one above the other on theirheads; and little boys and girls come to sing anddance, hoping somebody will give them a penny, and 36 HELEN Oj
