Summary

[edit]
Description

Heidelberg Castle and its gardens around 1619, At the time, Heidelberg Castle was the home of the Elector Palatine, one of the seven princes who elected the Holy Roman Emperor.

This scene, with variations, is still a classic view of Heidelberg. The old bridge was then the only bridge over the Neckar River. The Heilig-Geist-Kirche, the most prominent structure seen from the castle, is left of the bridge. Heidelberg has spread greatly into the Rhine plain. The hills in the background are on the other side the the Hhine River, perhaps 30 km (20 miles) away. There is a hill east of the castle, which might be the vantage point.

The castle gardens, called the Hortus Palatinus, were famous. They were built for Elector Friedrich V in 1616-1619 by Solomon de Gaus.

Friedrich did not enjoy the gardens very long. He accepted the title of King of Bohemia (now the territory of the Czech Republic) from Protestant nobles in 1619, lost the Battle of White Mountain to the Emperor's forces in 1620, and was an exile he rest of his life. Friedrich V is known to history as the "Winter King."

The Electorate was given for a time to Maximilian I, Duke of Bavaria. The line of Friedrich V was later restored. The garden and castle were destroyed by French armies in 1687-1691. The capital od the state that was later known as Baden was moved to Mannheim in 1720.
