| Description |
English: The cement and stone remnant of the Hecla Mine stands tall and sturdy though off limits as there are many areas of decay.
It resides in Burke Canyon, Idaho, near Coeur d'Alene. Burke Canyon is famous for it's violent war between the miners and company guards in 1892. It was a deadly dispute over pay and other issues. The Canyon is only 300 feet wide so very tight quarters for the community. Along with the mining buildings were homes, a railroad and hotel which encompassed the railroad and the creek through its lobby. All these buildings fitting within a 300 foot wide area between the hills. In 1891, silver/lead ore valued at nine million dollars had been shipped out of the Coeur d'Alene mining district, including a quarter-million dollars' worth of gold bullion. |
