Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dust filled the Tarim Basin in mid-December 2023, completely obscuring the western portion of the Taklimakan Desert from satellite view. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the dust storm on December 15. A layer of dust covers the entire desert, but it is thicker in the west and south. Located within the Tarim Basin in northwest China, the Taklimakan desert is one of the driest locations on Earth. With mountain ranges flanking three sides, the basin sits within a rain shadow, which means it receives less than 10 millimeters (0.4 inches) of rain each year. The lack of moisture has created a barren desert, which is about 85 percent shifting sand dunes—and an excellent source for massive dust storms. Prevailing winds typically come from the east, where the basin opens up, carrying dust towards the west.
