Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Heathland mire west of Islands Thorns Inclosure, New Forest. This part of the Forest is dominated by gravel-capped ridges, and on the terrace plateau you find humid heathland. At the terrace edge, where the gravel cap meets the underlying clay, you find seepage step mires. General advice relating to these step mires is along the lines of "if your first step goes in ankle-deep and your next knee-deep, you'd better make your next step backwards". The well-worn tracks on the gravel ridges necessarily avoid the step mires. The trees in shadow on the left are on the slopes of Crock Hill, the site of a Romano-British pottery industry.
