[edit]DescriptionHealy Creek-Nenana River confluence (Healy, Alaska, USA) (25847629178).jpg |
(photo by Kira Harris) (view from railroad; looking ~east-northeast) Healy Creek: looking upstream. Nenana River: upstream is to the right. The watercourse in the bottom part of the picture is the Nenana River. Located in central Alaska, it is a ~140 mile long, north-flowing tributary of the Tanana River. The photo depicts several channels and mid-river sediment bars. The Nenana River originates from the Nenana Glacier area of the Alaska Range. The river in the center and right portions of the picture is Healy Creek, a west-flowing tributary of the Nenana River. It is a braided stream heavily choked with sediments. The outcrops in the hillsides above Healy Creek are structurally-tilted sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age. The succession includes some coals. The hillsides above that consist of forest-covered Nenana Gravel, an upper Tertiary (Miocene to Pliocene), coarse-grained siliciclastic unit. Locality: Healy Creek-Nenana River confluence, just southeast of the town of Healy, central Alaska, USA (63° 51' 00.22" North latitude, 148° 56’ 25.69" West longitude) Bedrock geology info. from: Csejtey et al. (1992) - Geology and geochronology of the Healy Quadrangle, south-central Alaska. United States Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map I-1961. Plate 1. |
