H63D Syndrome patient iron deposits in Substantia nigra

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: sonography example with a CC license. Sorry for the somewhat poor quality. Due to the sanctions against Iran we don’t have the latest equipment. The healthy person was male, 42 y.o., the H63D Syndrome patient also male, 43 y.o. with low ferritin, too low transferrin and a transferrin saturation of 62% in average (10 tests within 2 years).

As you can see, even with older machines you can easily detect iron deposits in Substantia nigra. However, one must be very careful not to confuse it with iron due to Parkinson’s which becomes visible in PD patients once there is cell death happening. A thorough pre-sonography exploration should exclude a PD trait running in the family, and of course the patient has to by homozygous for HFE H63D mutation and have high iron markers in the lab tests.

So the exploration/lab tests plus the sonography have to be interpreted together!
