[edit]DescriptionHealth Sciences Charter School admin ofcs - fmr A. W. Haile Motors, Brost Chevrolet (as seen from Bryant Street) - Buffalo, New York - 20201004.jpg |
English: As seen in October 2020 from the east end of Bryant Street: the building at 1291 Main Street in Buffalo, New York that now houses the administrative offices of the Health Sciences Charter School distinguishes itself architecturally through its use of the Spanish Colonial Revival style, a relatively rare one in the Buffalo area that appears here in a streamlined but still intriguing form. The façade consists of an enormous blind arcade separated by engaged Tuscan columns, while the red tone of the shingles on the shallow-pitched side-gable roof imitates the look of the terra cotta tile on Spanish-style roofs. Like many of its neighbors, the building at 1291 Main traces its history to the early 20th century, when this stretch of Main Street was famous as Buffalo's "Auto Row", where a bevy of dealerships, distribution facilities, and (early in its history) manufacturers were to be found. A. W. Haile Motors, a Studebaker dealership, occupied the building from its 1917 opening until 1930, when the Great Depression led to the bankruptcy of the business. Brost Chevrolet took over subsequently and used the building as their showroom until 1958, when their operations were consolidated on their erstwhile used car lot across the street where Delta Sonic car wash is today; as of the following year, the dealership's administrative offices were only one of several tenants occupying the building. Health Sciences Charter School purchased the property in 2013. |
