Movement—Swing the right leg straight outward andaround, to a position about thirty inches diagonallyback of the left foot, as shown in Fig. 70. Nowswing the right leg outward and around to thecrossed position in front of the left leg. Repeatthe movement, then reverse the position of the feet,and swing the left leg around back of the right. Ximes 5 20 — 40. Rate per minute, 8 — 16 — 24. Caution In this exercise throw the weight of the body on to the advanced leg, and try and maintain perfectpoise and balance throughout the entire movement. Movement — Bend the knees and jump to the strideposition with the feet about twenty-four inchesapart, at the same time swing the arms outwardand upward until the backs of the hands touch overthe head, as shown in Fig. 72. Now jump from thestride position to the first position, and at the sametime bring the palms of the hands together behindthe back. Eepeat, first striking the hands behind theback, then in front of the body. Times —10 ^ 20 — 40. Eate per minute, 16 — 32 —48. Caution — In this exercise be sure and move the armsand legs together, and jump out and in to bothpositions. Parts Affected — Extensors of the legs, and the calves,shoulders, and muscles of natural and forced respira-tion. 236
