Land Commander for the initial response effort in the wake of hurricane Irma briefs the UK’s Joint Task Force lead on the situation across the British Virgin Islands.

Commanding Officer 40 Commando, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Maynard, initial Land Commander for the relief operation, has spent the afternoon visiting key areas across the islands with Mr Chris Austin, the Head of the UK’s Joint Task Force.

Flying aboard RAF Pumas from 33 Squadron, RAF Benson, the small team started in the capital of Tortola, Road Town, conducting briefs at the government offices. They then flew to the remote Island of Jost Van Dyke which suffered badly in the path of Irma. 80 out of the 300 people on the island completely lost their home and all of their possessions as a result of the storm. The aid provided by DFID and delivered by 40 Commando and the Pumas of RAF Benson last week had been put to good use here. Some of the roofless houses are now using the tarpaulins and shelter kits.

The team had local expertise in the form of Mitch Turnbull, the District Representative for Jost Van Dyke. He said, “It has been a useful trip today and I’m glad Mr Austin was here with us”.
