Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Head of Dionysos (The God of Wine and Divine Intoxication). Pakistan (ancient region of Gandhara), 4th–5th century. Terracotta, H. 9 1/2 in.; W. 7 in. ; D. 6 1/2 in.. Metropolitan Museum of Art. This mature bearded man has grape leaves in his hair, suggesting that he is Dionysos. The furrowed brow, indications of age, and piercing gaze reflect a taste for naturalism. The head was buried, and over the centuries a hard crust developed on the surface.
Terre cuite, H. 24.1, L. 17.8, P. 16.5 cm.. Metropolitan Museum of Art.
