Head and shoulders portrait of a young gentleman

This distinguished portrait, executed with a high degree of finish, is by the French painter and engraver, Antoine Chazal. Best known for flower paintings and portraits, Chazal studied under Gérard van Spaendonck (1746-1822) and became a Professor of Iconography at the Jardin des Plantes. Such a grand, signed portrait by the artist is something of a rarity on the market.
