A PARK DEER 10138 YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK 115 bers of the Deer family proper occur in the park, theMule Deer, and the White-Tailed Deer. The formerhas larger antlers, which fork dichotomously, in shapelike two Ys on each horn. The coat of the Black-Tailed Deer is steel gray in winter and gray brown insummer. Except in the park it is being destroyed muchfaster than it breeds, which means an early extinctionof this species. The White-Tailed Deer, unlike theMule Deer, is a skulker; it hides in the brush and car-ries its head low, so seldom is seen. Its name is de-rived from its long bushy tail, which is white under-neath and pointed. The Moose is one of the few big game animalsthat is increasing steadily. Moose are now abundantabout Yellowstone Lake and the Upper YellowstoneRiver near the south boundary. They are spreadingnorthward and occur in the Lamar watershed and theGallatin range.
