to 300 feet above theplateau, upon which the Mammoth Hotel, Fort Yellow-stone and other buildings are constructed. This plateauwas formerly an active portion of the hot springs. Itcontains many extinct craters and openings, some ofthem leading into immense caves, but the presence ofobnoxious fumes and gases makes it impossible to ex-plore them. VIEWING THE TERRACES. It requires fully two hours to visit all the prominentsprings and terraces. Still the construction of the newroad to Golden Gate, which passes along the base ofJupiter Terrace, gives one, while riding past, an ex-cellent idea of the form and coloring of one of the larg-est terraces. To thoroughly inspect the beauties ofthese wonderful springs, one must do considerablewalking, whether he takes a carriage to the top of theformation, or walks the entire distance. Liberty Cap, an extinct hot spring cone, standing atthe foot of Terrace Mountain, near the road, is fifty-two feet high and twenty feet in diameter at its base.It is formed of over-lapping layers of deposit, evidentlyhaving been built up by the overflow of water throughthe orifice in the top. Scientists have been unable todecide whether it was built up independently or formedby the action of the elements wearing away the softmaterial surrounding it. The DeviFs Thumb, a cone of similar structure, butsmaller, is located some 200 feet west of Liberty Cap,partially imbedded in the hillside. The path leading tothe formation past the Devils Thumb is generallytaken when returning, the one for the ascent branchingoff the main road a short distance south of Liberty Cap. Minerva Terrace is a mass of deposit forty feet inheight, covering an area of nearly three-fourths
