short distance south of the Black Growler. EmeraldPool is somewhat concealed in the timber and is ahandsome emerald-tinted spring, 40x50 feet in size. The sulphur-lined basin with coral walls, most beau-tifully shaped, can be seen to an appalling depth. It isone of the many quiet springs, slightly overflowing.The water is quite hot, having a temperature of 186degrees Fahrenheit at its edge. 34 YElvIvOWSTONK NATlONAEv PARK. The New Crater.—This geyser is about 500 feetsoutheast of Emerald Pool, surrounded by huge blocksof dark yellow rock. It came into prominence duringthe fall of 1891, when quite a commotion, not unlike anearthquake, was observed. When it burst forth a greatvolume of water was forced out, flooding the ravineleading to the valley below. Since then it has settleddown to ordinary eruptions, about every thirty minutes.The rock-covered crater prevents the discharge attain-ing any great height. Indications are, however, thatit will soon be classed among the large geysers.

NEW CRATER GEYSER, NORRIS BASIN. TOUR OF THE PARK. 35 The Monarch Geyser, the king of geysers in NorrisBasin, is situated at the base of the hill, nearly sur-rounded by a bluff of brilliantly colored rocks, upon thelevel of the plateau about i,ooo feet east of the road-way. The crater consists of two oblong openings, thelarger of which is twenty feet long and three feet wide.Eruptions of the Monarch occur without warning andconsist of a series of explosions, frequently more than adozen, in which columns of water are thrown lOO feethigh. The intervals of eruptions are ordinarily abouttwelve hours. The Fearless, Vixen, and Steamboatare geysers of minor importance, but are well worth avisit, as well as numerous other springs and pools yetunnamed. Tourists that have walked from the hotel throughthe basin, meet their conveyance near the Monarch,where a loading platform and resting place have beenconstructed.
