Text Appearing Before Image:
edition was head-ed by Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka, of Arctic fame, and accompanying him were several eastern gentlemenand F. Jay Haynes, as photographer, together with acorps of guides, packers and assistants. The partywas outfitted with Arctic ^sleeping bags/ the Nor-wegian ^^ski, the Canadian web snowshoe, and to-boggans to carry supplies, photographic equipmentand astronomical instruments, it being the intention tocamp wherever night overtook the party, regardless ofthe hotels. The expedition consumed three days inreaching Norris, leaving the Mammoth Hot SpringsJanuary 2d, and camping at Indian Creek the firstnight, with the thermometer thirty-seven degrees be-low zero. The second camp was near Obsidian Cliff. This very slow rate of traveling was due, in a greatmeasure, to the depth and Hghtness of the snow, inwhich the toboggans sank readily, making them diffi-cult to draw. At Norris, Lieutenant Schwatka unfortu-nately fell ill, and was compelled to abandon further•exploration.

112 YKl^IvOWSTON^ NATIONAI, PARK. Mr. Haynes, who was specially desirous of obtain-ing a line of photographic negatives of winter scenesthat would embrace the most interesting portions ofthe great reserve, employed two of the sturdiest menin the Schwatka party, and, accompanied by EdwardWilson, a government scout, pushed on, and succeededin making a complete circuit of the Park, visiting theLower and Upper Geyser Basins, the Falls and GrandCanyon, and crossing over Mt. Washburn via Yanceysto the Mammoth Hot Springs. The fallacy of attempting to drag toboggans wasproven in getting to Norris, hence this party resortedto the customary fashion of packing upon their backstheir equipment, sleeping bags and provisions, eachcarrying from thirty to forty-five pounds. The Nor-wegian snowshoe, or ski, is a slender runner of tough, springy wood, slightly turned up at the forward end, some four inches wide by twelve feet long, and fittedwith a looped thong or strap, into which to insert thefoot.
