is located some 200 feet west of Liberty Cap,partially imbedded in the hillside. The path leading tothe formation past the DeviPs Thumb is generallytaken when returning, the one for the ascent branchingoff the main road a short distance south of Liberty Cap. Minerva Terrace is a mass of deposit forty feet inheight, covering an area of nearly three-fourths of anacre, with a hot spring on the summit some twenty feetin diameter, the temperature of which is, at the edge,154 degrees Fahrenheit. The constant changing ofthe overflow and the intermittent character of thespring make it impossible to predict, a season in ad-vance, which will be the active side of the terrace, orwhether it will be active at all. At times the spring dis-appears entirely, and the terrace remains inactive anduninteresting in consequence for months. The changein overflow, when the spring is active, is accounted forby the rapid deposition of carbonate of lime, whichforces the water eventually over the entire surface.

TOUR OF THE PARK. 19 The quantity of water overflowing is very small com-pared with the amount of deposit, which, under favor-able circumstances, is about one-sixteenth of an inchin four days. Articles of iron, glass, or any hard sub-stance placed where the water can run over them, aresoon coated with a crystal-white deposit. During peri-ods of activity, basins or pools, fringed with stalactiticmasses, line the east side of the terrace, presenting themost delicate coloring, from the lightest cream at thetop to the deepest shades of yellow at the base, the pre-dominating color being bright orange, each pool orbasin being filled with transparent blue water. Theelevation (some twenty feet high) immediately back ofthe terrace is an excellent point from which to obtaina good view of the interior of the spring. This terraceis about seventy-five feet above the level at the base ofLiberty Cap, while the main portion of the Hot Springsis on the mound some ninety feet higher. Jupiter Terrace, t
