Early in March, 1894, a party was organized at Ft.Yellowstone for the purpose of visiting the winterranges of the game, to ascertain, as near as possible, the exact number of buffalo that still exists, and securephotographs of the same. The party consisted of Cap-tain Scott, Lieut. Forsyth, Scout Burgess, Mr. Burns,Photographer Haynes and three non-commissionedofficers. The first day out from the lake only elk wereseen by the scout and his companion, there being nosign of buffalo. They went into camp about twelvemiles up Pelican Creek. The second day they discovered, in a secluded spot, the cache of a poacher, very much to their surprise,as it was supposed that no one was in the Park killinggame. The cache consisted of a canvas tepee, sleepingbag, provisions and toboggan, and six buffalo headssuspended in a tree near by. A trace of fire in thetepee led the scout to believe that the poacher was inthe vicinity, and the next move was to capture him. Ithad been snowing constantly all the morning, and allsnowshoe tracks leading from the camp were entirelyobliterated. Some five miles from the camp they heardfive or six rifle shots fired in rapid succession.
