GIANT GEYSER. The Giant.—It is nearly a mile from the hotel to thismonarch of geysers, situated, like many others, in closeproximity to Firehole River. Its cone, about ten feetin height, though some 200 feet from the roadway, isconspicuous. A few feet to the north is an irregularmound, from which considerable steam escapes fromsundry small holes, undoubtedly connected in somemanner with the geyser and acting as its escape valves.The platform of deposit upon which the cone stands isabout seventy-five feet in diameter. The cone is brokenon the west side from the apex nearly to its base,affording a good view of the interior of the crater,which is almost constantly in a state of turbulent boil-ing and splashing. In 1881 the break in the cone wasnot nearly so large, not more than half its present pro- DO YDl^I^OWSTONi: NATIONAL, PARK. portions, the enlargement being without a doubt theresult of an unusually violent eruption.
