The construction of theroadway along its base was accomplished in a novelmanner and with considerable difficulty ; the use ofblasting powder being out of the question, great fireswere built around the huge blocks of glass, which,when expanded, were suddenly cooled by dashingwater upon them, resulting in shattering the blocksinto small fragments. This process made possible theconstruction of this really wonderful roadway, proba-bly the only piece of glass road in the world. There be-ing no other exposed ridge of obsidian in the RockyMountains, and this material being more desirable thanflint for the manufacture of arrow heads, it was once afamous resort for all tribes of Indians, who congre-gated here m great niuiibers. TOUR OF THi; PARK. 29 of obsidian and specimens of partly finished arrowheads are found throughout the Park, generally atplaces occupied by the Indians as summer camps. Beaver Lake.—The roadway continues along theeast side of Beaver Lake, which is about one mile longand a quarter of a mile wide. Several beaver dams areconstructed across the lake, forming a series of artificialobstructions, each having a fall of from two to fourfeet. A beaver house, still inhabited, is located nearthe west shore of the lake. Since the rigid enforcementof the Park regulations regarding the killing of game,Beaver Lake is becoming alive with numerous waterfowl, the passing carriages not seeming to alarm them.The reflection of the pine-clad hills among the densegrowth of pond lilies which line its shores, adds to thebeauties of this lake.
