Summary
[edit]DescriptionHawthorn Hive - geograph.org.uk - 1539876.jpg |
English: Hawthorn Hive View north to Chourdon Point with the tide coming in.
A large number of ship-wrecks are to be found off this coast. Many are a result of North Sea storms and the dangerous rocky coastline but others were caused by collisions in the busy sea-lines serving the coal trade around Seaham. Several of these appear to have involved Scandinavian ships. Sinkings of ships occurred during both World Wars. A WWI German submarine was sunk off Seaham and is now a war grave. The location of a WWII German bomber is unknown. As the coast has been cleaned up, divers now report an improvement in sea water clarity in this area from zero up to 5m. |
