Description

G-AVXI was delivered new to the Civil Aviation Flying Unit at Stansted in July 1969. At that time, CAFU was part of the Board of Trade and I photographed the 748 at the Farnborough Air Show on 7 Sep 1970 with BoT titling on the cabin roof and CAFU titles on the rear fuselage. In Apr 1972 CAFU and its fleet passed to the newly-formed Civil Aviation Authority and ‘VXI continued to operate on testing and calibration flights of UK radio and radar navigational aids through to CAFU privatisation in 1996, when it passed to Flight Precision. It was retired soon afterwards and eventually came to Southend for storage, where it was scrapped in Nov 2001.
