| Description |
English: South point on the Big Island of Hawaii is the southern most point of United States. Going south from south point will take one directly to Antarctica. South point is about one and half hour drive from Kailua Kona and about one hour and forty five minutes from the town of Hilo. From the south point, one can hike for 3 miles to get to the secluded Green Sand Beach which is one of the only 2 beaches in the world with naturally occurring green sand. Green sand is formed by the gemstone Olivine. Instead of hiking, you can also drive if you have a high 4x4 drive vehicle. Some locals my also give you ride back and forth for about $15 each person. It is definitely worth the trip and life time opportunity to view green sand. |
