Havasupai Indian woman basket maker, ca.1900
Photograph of a Havasupai Indian woman basket maker, ca.1900. She is wrapped in a brightly patterned blanket or cloth under which she wears a print dress. She wears many beaded necklaces around her neck. She sits cross-legged on the ground while her hands work on an hourglass-shaped basket with triangles in alternating bands in the design. At left sits another rounder basket, also with bands. At right is a "Kathak", a large conical basket. Wild grass grows behind her. In the background is the canyon wall (blurred), cast in shadow.
