Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Hatfield Palace, Old Hatfield, Hertfordshire (Grade I). Built in 1497, Bishop of Ely, King Henry VII's minister John Cardinal Morton, originally with four wings in a square surrounding a courtyard. The palace was seized by Henry VIII, and his children, Edward VI and the future Elizabeth I, grew up here. Henry's eldest daighter, the future Mary I, lived here between 1533 and 1536 when she was sent to wait on the then Princess Elizabeth as punishment for refusing to recognise Henry's marriage to Anne Boleyn and his religious reforms. Elizabeth's successor, James I, disliked the palace so gave it to his chief minister, Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, in exchange for Theobalds Palace in Cheshunt, home of the Cecil family. Cecil tore down three wings of this palace and built Hatfield House.
