Summary
[edit]DescriptionHasankeyf Uphill walk 17 8315.jpg |
English: This gate is from the Eyubbian period , say 13th century. It was believed to be charmed because it has a snake and a scorpion on its wall, hewn in stone (text on a notice board, I think the period would be more generally called Ayyubid).
It's location can be seen on picture nr. 8321: it is at the start of a steep road that later leads to another gate, and then further up. One of a few series of pictures that were taken before the waters would rise. Beyond the town a gorge slowly led uphill, after a while a road to the right went higher and higher, passing two remaining gates of a former seven, until one reached the rather flat top of the hill containing a former palace, a mosque, and many other remains. From recent (2020) aerial pictures I get the impression up there large tracts have been covered with concrete or similar materials, so the country one sees on pictures from there has changed too. Along the side of the gorge there were many cave and rock-cut dwellings, all will be submerged by now. The series starts slightly above the river. A few pictures were taken after climbing a hill to the left of the walk into the gorge. |
