The statue of John Harvard, seen at Harvard Yard, and a key landmark on the Harvard campus. John Harvard (1617-1638) graduated from Emmanuel College in Cambridge, England, then emigrated to Massachusetts in 1637. Upon his death, he bequeathed his library and half of his estate to the "Colledge at Newtowne," which had been founded by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1636. In response, by the time the first students enrolled in 1638, the college, the first in North America, was renamed Harvard College. As John Harvard died so young, and so soon after his arrival in America, no images of his likeness are known. This statue, sculpted by Daniel Chester French, used Sherman Hoar, Class of 1882, as his model for John Harvard. But of course, ask the outside tour guide who is leading these Korean-speaking visitors through the Harvard campus, and he will instead gladly say that "the Reverend John Harvard founded Harvard University to spread the word of God wide and far through His chosen land of America." Seriously, that is what I picked up in his lecture. Gotta love the evangelical Christianity, Korean-style, which has done untold amounts of damage to America (especially my home state of California). |
