Many obstacles were thrown in their way by parties longinterested in the successive quadrennial contracts, but all were over-come, and improvements so numerous and radical have since beenmade in appliances for doing the work, that inventions protected bypatents have since enabled the company to underbid all competitors.The Morgan Envelope Company of Springfield, Mass., joined thePlimpton Company in the first contract with the government, and theassociation has continued till the present time. This branch of thework has always been conducted in a separate building, and so far asaccounts and details are concerned, kept entirely by itself. In 1886, to meet the growing demands of their general trade, thecompany built a factory for their own exclusive use on Pearl street.Jt is constructed of brick with stone trimmings, and has four floors
