Er ist Autor einer Reihe von Büchern über die kulturelle und intellektuelle Geschichte Japans und zu Fragen der geschichts- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Theorie. Er ist Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Sein Jüngstes Buch, erschienen im November 2015 ist «Marx After Marx: History and Time in the Expansion of Capitalism». In diesem Buch stellt Harry Harootunian die Annahmen des westlichen Marxismus und dessen These von der endgültigen Gestalt, die dieser Kapitalismus im Westen genommen habe, in Frage. Er führt eine radikale De-Provinzialisierung des Werkes von Marx durch, indem er zu den ursprünglichen Erklärungen für die Entstehung und Entwicklung des Kapitalismus zurückkehrt, die weit über Europa und Nordamerika auf Asien, Afrika und Lateinamerika verweist: Dadurch können die gegensätzlichen Wege verstanden werden, die der Kapitalismus im 20. Jahrhundert genommen hat. Harootunian stützt sich dabei auf u.a. Rosa Luxemburg, Wladimir Lenin und Antonio Gramsci. Es entsteht ein Verständnis von Weltgeschichte, in der Raum, Zeit und reale Kämpfe die Systeme der Kapitalverwertung regional geprägt haben.
