The Harrowing of Hell in Bristol Cathedral

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A relief sculpture of the Harrowing of Hell in the South Transept of Bristol Cathedral. It depicts Jesus standing on the head of Satan and reaching down to Adam and Eve. Believed to have been carved shortly before the Norman Conquest, it is a rare and important example of Anglo-Saxon stonework. It was discovered under the floor of the Chapter House after a fire in 1831, having been used as a cofin lid.
