Text Appearing Before Image:
all hisremaining dogs around him, he drew his pistols—one ineach hand—and plunged spurs into his horses flanks. Inspite of the numbers against him. he broke through themass of savages, but the gallant horse that bore him felldead as he cleared the Indian ranks. Haden had firedboth his pistols, and had no time to load them again. Hewas practically unarmed now, and the distance he stillhad to go before reaching the gates was considerable. His chance of escape seemed smaller than ever, but hequickly sprang from the saddle, and ran with all hismight, hotly pursued, and under a terrific fire from therifles of the savages. The gate was held a little way openfor him to pass, and when he entered the fort his nearestpursuers were so close at his heels that there was barelytime for the men to shut the gate in their faces. Strangely enough, the brave young fellow was not hurtin any way. Five bullets had passed through his clothes, but his skin was not broken. 3, 1883. HARPERS YOUNG PEOPLE. 553
Text Appearing After Image:
SCENE AT A FRENCH FETE. IN France every town and hamlet has its patron saint, and every patron saint lias one or more days set apartin each year in which he is especially honored. Theseare called fete or feast days, and during them there is ageneral holiday and merry-making. The village then be-comes a fair, full of eating and drinking, music and dan-cing, booths and shows. Those of our young people whohave been at Brighton Beach or the Iron Pier on Coney Island this summer will have a very good idea how aFrench village enjoys itself during the fete of its patronsaint. There are amusements of all kinds, but the boys andgirls are sure to buy mirlitoiis. A niirlitou is a tube ofhollow wood, covered at the end with a piece of mem-brane, and having a hole on each side near the end. With this toy, which costs a cent, they can make a very loudnoise, and as they all seem to enjoy doing so, you may im-agine what a Babel there is. But no one seems to mind 554 HARPERS YOUNG PEOPLE. VOLUME IV. it:
