He walked along a full mile before he reached a railroadstation, and there he went in, asking the ticket-masterwhen the trains went on to Mat-plains. Nothing before two oclock, said the man, rathergruffly. Dick hesitated. He did not feel quite so sure nowas he had done that he could ask for a free ride to Mar-plains. After a moment he turned away, resolving towalk on. That, at least, he could do, and he was not verytired. The station was known as Burchell, and was one of thelonely places at which one always wonders that any trainever stops; but, as Dick had seen, it was where Nancy andher father lived, and the remembrance of the warm cozykitchen he had left took away something of the desolatefeeling with which the rough, forlorn place inspiredhim.
