e. But the tiger was very faithful, and hebecame very gentle and harmed no one; he slept on theporch, and lay at her feet, and in cold weather breathed onher hands to warm them. This went on for seven years, when she died, and allher relations came to her funeral. While they disputedfor the first seat of honor, the tiger walked in and stoodby it, roaring his lamentations until the walls trembled—so did the relations. That night he ran off to the hills, and was seen no more. The people thought he had gone forever, and went onmaking preparations for the funeral. Finally everythingwas ready, and they were about to lay her in her gra\e.when, as the mourners stood about, he came rushing downwith eyes like fire, and roaring a thunder-peal. Theyscattered in fright, but he disappeared as suddenly as hecame, and was never seen again. Then the people built a shrine in his honor, and calledit The Shrine of the Faithful Tiger, and it remainsthere to this day. 56S HARPERS YOUNG PEOPLE. VOLUME IV.
