There was a marsh in front of them, and VanArtevelde protected their Hank by a fortification consist-ing of the carts and some stakes driven into the ground.He then sent a messenger to the Count, begging him topardon the people of Ghent, and having done this, he or-dered his men to go to sleep for the night. At daybreak the next morning the little army wasaroused to make final preparations for the desperate workbefore them. The priests exhorted the men to fight to thedeath, showing them how useless it would be to surrenderor to run away, as they were sure to be put to death at anyrate. Their only hope for life was in victory, and if theycould not win that, it would be better to die fighting likemen than to surrender and be put to death like dogs. After these exhortations were given, seven gray friarssaid mass and gave the sacrame
