OLD FORT YUKON. the inhabitants fed onthe salmon that ran up theriver to spawn, a closer inspec-tion showed that the householdutensils were equally rude. We founda few buckets and pans, ingeniously madeof single pieces of birch-bark. We also founda few spoons made of the horn of the moun-tain sheep or goat, but the carvings on thehandles were dismal failures compared withthe elaborate work of the Indians on thePacific coast of Alaska. The brush houses of the Ayans seem tobe constructed so as to accommodate twofamilies, with a common ridge-pole andan aisle, open at both ends, running down^ between the two compartments. Pos-sibly this style of architecture wasnecessary where there was no treefor the pole to rest against.
