ed, and picking the furas a bird dresses its feathers. Even theliead was thus combed by the claws ofthe liind-feet, and after an hour of thiswork the little creatures were beautifullysleek and glossy. The platypus is in several respects oneof the oddest animals in the world, andsurely it is one of the last we should ex-pect to find possessing the curious habitof rolling itself into a ball. Another creature assuming the ball shape for safety during sleep is an inter-esting little fellow from the same coun-try, the native bear, or koala. This isa most attractive little beast, not muchlarger than a cat, and clothed in long,ash3^ gfay fur. His short face, with itslarge black eyes and nose, and the longhairy decorations of his ears, give him aquaint and piquant expression, and when—as is her custom—the maternal koalatravels about with her droll black-hairedbaby perched upon her shoulders, it pre-sents one of the most charming of sights. MR. WEGGS PARTY ON THE KISSIMMEE. BY HENRI DAUGE.
Text Appearing After Image:
rpHERE were eight of us, four being_L ladies and four gentlemen—all of uswearing old clothes, and most of us big-straw hats—who came down on the tri-weekly construction train of the SouthFlorida Railroad, then running from San- ford to Kissimmee City. We were allperched on a pile of lumber on a flat car,the only place for passengers or luggage. Our party was a youthful and adventurousone, bound on a camping-out excur-sion ; still it hesitated on the brink of theunknown, and having reached KissimmeeCity, we pitched our tents at first on anisland near it, at the head of the big bluelake Toliopekaliga. The new town, Avithits sixteen houses, none painted or white-washed, but all looking as new and yellowas only fresh pine lumber can look, hadat least the beginnings of civilization—abakery, a restaurant, and hotel in processof erection. Our third night in our first resting-placewas passed by a glorious camp fire in sol-emn conclave, the great live-oaks and hick-ories and cabbage-palms
