He gave his commandsin a stentorian voice, and with a pomp-ous stride in pace with the martial music.After putting his men through all sorts ofevolutions, he bade them to charge uponthe enemy. They did so. It was a whis-key barrel. And when the encounter wasover, not one of them was able to tellwhether he was dead or wounded. The Park as originally laid out was asquare plot of ten acres, but by the exten-sion through it of two streets it has beendivided into four smaller parks, one ofwhich is occupied by the monument, an-other by a stone oratorium for Fourth ofJuly and other orators, and the two oth-ers are ornamented with fountains andsmall lakes, tastefully fringed with flow-ers and flowering shrubs. It is in theheart of the business portion of the city,and near it are the Post-oflice and otherbuildings. Before the present Post-office was erect- HARPERS NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE.

The club should never admitany but the original members, and whenone should die, his plate should be laidand his vacant chair be set at the table asif he were still with the remaining eleven.And this should go on, as one after anoth-er dropx^ed out of his place, till the lastone, the sole survivor of the twelve, shouldtake his solitary seat in the silent room,and with the eleven empty plates and va-cant chairs around him, should quaff hislonely glass of wine to the memory of his•departed associ
