pect was not so bad. The house waswell provisioned at least; as tidy as could be ex-pected under the circumstances; and, besides, the most delicate olfactories could not have de-tected the slightest smell of any kind, exceptdried codfish : but if folks are squeamish on thisor other subjects, they had better stay at home, and be content to do their traveling throughHarpers Magazine. As no one appeared to re-ceive us, Dick thumped upon the glass case thatcontained the fancy goods, jewelry, and ginger-cakes, and forthwith from a side door entered alittle old woman with a mothery vinegar aspect, who saluted us sharply with, Well, what have ye got to sell? Nothing at all, replied Dick, depositingupon a chair the knapsack which contained ourbaggage. Then, quoth she, take your traps andtramp. Madam, said I, with mildness, yet assum-ing some dignity of manner, we are strangerswho have come a-pleasuring to this famous place, and have been informed that you could enter-tain us for the day, perhaps.

My husband! exclaimed Mother Caiy.My husband? Madam, I allude to the lame gentlemanwho took our horse and promised to have himfed. Our hostess stood for a moment speechless, asif undecided whether she should put me to deatha la basilisk, or annihilate me with a packageof codfish which lay near at hand. At lengthshe shrieked out, like an angered sea-gull, My husband, did you say? gentle/nan, didyou call him ?—that creature that I hired fromthe alms-house to attend to peoples horses! Iguess your eye-sight is not very good. Sir, oryou must be strangers in this country. I amMistress Elizabeth Gary, at your service. Myhusband I faugh! I thank
