Impervious to fear or pity, the iron-heartedmen of war advanced upon the prize; but theold womans broomstick rattled among theirshakos and bayonets at such a rate that theywere fain to call a halt. The pig still stuck tohis cover, and the sergeant, handing his musketto a comrade, rushed in and attempted to seizethe rebellious grandam by the waist. In thisrash assault he received such a whack across hisnoggin that he saw rockets, and possibly mis-taking them for signals from the fleet, he beathasty retreat toward the boats with his squad,followed by volleys of red-hot texts.
