lmuck gourmands. The flesh of thecamel is sometimes used, but only on great festaloccasions, or when the animal has been killed byaccident. The summer costume of both men and womenconsists of two or three silk or cotton kalats, orlong dressing-gowns. These are made double,so that when one side is dirty the garment isturned, and thus a new side appears; when thisbecomes more foul than its predecessor it is turn-ed again, and so on until the garment drops off,a mass of filth and rags, when a new one is puton, to undergo the same round of changes. Theidea of washing one of these articles appears nev-er to have occurred to them. The summer cos-tume of children is still more economical. Thejuveniles take a roll on the bank of a muddypool; the scorching sun quickly dries the coat-ing which they thus obtain, and their toilet if;complete. When their dress begins to showwear, another comfortable roll in the mud re-pairs it, so that it is as good as new. In the C20 HARPERS NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE.

shsitans cavern. winter—for the cold is severe on these broad, windy plains—men, women, and children wearfur coats, all made alike, so that it is difficult todistinguish the sex of the wearers. Their dwellings consist of conical tents, madeof willow frames so light that they can be trans-ported on the backs of camels, covered withvoilocks or strips of felt. These are manufac-tured by the women in pieces of twenty-five feetlong and seven broad. The process is very sim-\Aq. The wool of the sheep and the hair of thecamels are beaten together with rods until thewhole mass becomes soft and fleecy. Recils of a uniform size, seven feet long, have been placedside by side on the ground, connected by stringspassing through holes at the ends and middle.Upon this mat the hair and wool is spread in auniform mass, nine inches thick. The mat ij«then carefully rolled up, pressing the woolly sub-stance together. After lying some time, themat is unrolled, sprinkled with water, and thenrolled up aga
